For the first time, the federal government has released quality ratings on hospitals across the nation and out of 3,617 hospitals reviewed, only 102 hospitals (2.2%) received a 5 star rating.
Medicare’s Hospital Compare website at https://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare/search.html has just made it easier for you to check a hospital’s performance. The site has added overall star ratings to help you better understand which hospitals are performing at the top, which are average and which need improvement. The ratings are from one to five stars, with five being the best.
The Hospital Compare site has already gained a solid reputation with the public by showing how hospitals score on various quality indicators. You can compare hospitals across the nation on clinical outcomes, patient safety and customer satisfaction.
The new star ratings offer a snapshot of hospitals’ quality of care based on 64 individual measures of hospital performance already posted on the website. The ratings include how often a patient gets an infection after surgery, how long a patient must wait in the emergency department before being evaluated by a doctor or nurse, and how likely a patient is to get readmitted to the hospital.
